Hindole Majumdar & Ayushman Majumdar

Sunday, June 11th | 4:45pm

Tabla player Hindole Majumdar first received formal training from Shri Shibshankar Karmakar, a disciple of Ustad Karamatullah Khan of Farukkhabad Gharana. He continues to receive training from the great tabla maestro Pandit Sankha Chatterjee (of the Punjab and Farukhabad Gharana) in true guru-shishya parampara of that lineage. He has also had the opportunity to learn South Indian rhythm style from the mridangam exponent Pandit S. Shekhar. Now partly based in Milwaukee, he has become a Chicago favorite, accompanying visiting artists for the South Asian Classical Music Society. These include sitar maestro Shahid Parvez, sarodist Alam Khan, violinist Sangeeta Shankar and others. In Milwaukee he established and directs the Hindole Majumdar School of Music and Dance where he imparts training in both tabla and Indic rhythm systems, as applied to Western genres. For this special program Hindole will be performing a tabla duet with his son and student Ayushman Majumdar.

Born in a musical family Ayushman Majumdar started taking taalim in Tabla at the age of six from his father Sri Hindole Majumdar who is a professional Tabla player himself. Ayushman is trained in Farukhabad and Punjab Gharana which is a rare blend in the field of Tabla. He represents the fifth generation of Tabla playing in the Farukhabad Gharana starting from Ustad Masit Khansahab, then his son Ustad Keramattullah Khansahab and then his son Ustad Sabir Khan and their disciple Pandit Sankha Chatterjee who happens to be his father’s Guru. Ayushman has played many Tabla solos to his credit in different concerts both live and digital platforms. This is the beginning of his career so he needs all your blessings and good wishes to make himself a successful Tabla player.
