The hypnotic music of two professional hereditary caste music communities – the Langas and the Manganiyars – transport audiences to the heart of Rajasthan. On Sunday, October 18th, Mandala collaborates with Rupayan Sansthan for a virtual presentation of folk music. Rupayan Sansthan, or the Rajasthan Institute or Folklore, is a project created by ethnomusicologists and folklorists, which seeks to amplify the richness of Rajasthani music, folklore and language. Mandala’s Pranita Nayar has roots with the history and artistry of these musicians, and she is thrilled to present them again virtually.
The artists of RajRang (a unit of Rupayan Sansthan) have been featured at Lincoln Center, the Smithsonian, in the acclaimed production “Manganiyar Seduction”, and with music celebrities Yo-Yo Ma and Zakir Hussain. Featured ensemble musicians include Habib Khan Langa, Khete Khan Manganiar, Dere Khan Manganiar, Feroz Khan Manganiar and Anwar Khan Manganiar.
