SUMMARY:Dance Speak
DESCRIPTION:Mandala Arts presents a unique teen dance and music program that will facilitate dialogue about structural racism and personal experiences in Aurora’s communities. Participants will access weekly workshops featuring dance and music master classes – from renowned companies in Chicagoland – as well as community speakers and student-to-student dialogue.\n\nThe workshops will feature LatinX\, South Asian and Black American artists and cultures. Through cultural exchange\, artistic expression\, and conversation\, this program builds a safe space for teens to collectively navigate racial and cultural disparities in our communities.\n\n\nJoin us in February for six weekly one-hour workshops\, beginning Wednesday\, February 3 through March 10 from 5:00-6:00pm. All teen participants have the option of continuing after the six weeks to learn a routine to perform at the Festival of Color in downtown Aurora in May\, alongside professional artists. Additionally\, each student will receive a certificate of participation for completing the event.\n\n\n\nThis program is open to all students who attend Aurora schools or are a member of an Aurora-based youth organization. The cost of this program has been subsidized by the Healing Illinois Grant. Ask us more at info@mandalaarts.org\n\nClick here to change this text

SUMMARY:NIAM Presents: The Story of Ram Virtual Series
DESCRIPTION:The Story of Ram 2020 is a modern\, cross-cultural interpretation of the epic Ramayana. Permeating dance theatre and music traditions throughout South and Southeast Asia\, the mythology of Ram\, his wife Sita\, and his brother Lakshman exiled in the forest – and at odds with the brilliant king Ravana – has seen myriads of interpretations over the centuries. \nIn our retelling\, companies from around the world share their depiction of episodes from the Ramayana; joining us this year\, we will see martial artists from Manipur\, Kandyan dance from Sri Lanka\, as well as performances presented by our Midwestern diaspora\, from Balinese\, Thai and several Indian cultures. The tale that arises for 2020 is both old and new\, resonating with today’s artists and their communities; we see a need for unity and compassion\, despite differences in perspective. \nThe Schedule of the virtual presentation of the Program is as follows: \n\nEpisode # 1 on Tuesday\, December 1 (20-25 mins)\nEpisode # 2 on Wednesday\, December 2 (20-25 mins)\nEpisode # 3 on Thursday\, December 3 (20-25 mins)\nEpisode # 4 on Friday\, December 4 (20-25 mins)\nMain Program on Saturday\, December 5 (100 mins)\n\n*The audience is able to view previous episodes as well. For example\, on day 2 the audience can view the episode from day 1\, as well as the current episode.

SUMMARY:Unity: Amjad Ali Khan
DESCRIPTION:Amjad Ali Khan Samaagam | A Concerto for Sarod\, Concertante Group and String Orchestra\nKamala Sankaram | Aria for Soprano from Taking Up Serpents\nDmitri Shostakovich | Chamber Symphony in C Minor\, Op. 110a \nFeaturing Mandala Ensemble artists Ashwaty Chennat\, Colin Mascarenhas and Misha Talapatra in a classical dance performance. \nSamaagam means confluence – a flowing together or a gathering to celebrate. Master sarod player Amjad Ali Khan\, scion of a family of sarod musicians in central India\, composed Samaagam to entwine and rejoice in the classical music cultures of West and East. This stunning collaborative work creates an exhilarating bond of both traditions. Sankaram’s atmospheric aria from the opera Taking Up Serpents also brings together diverse conventions\, depicting a young woman’s reunion with her estranged family at her father’s deathbed. And Shostakovich in his Chamber Symphony mourns for his kin\, his countrymen\, and himself at a difficult time in his life. Weaving together quotations from his previous works\, the symphony “is so powerful that when I was writing it\, tears flowed as freely as water…”
